The 10-minute regen timer is just a notification that a parked regen needs to occur. A parked regen is going to go through a full cycle to ensure everything related to the engine and aftertreatment system is working properly. The aftertreatment covers the EGR, DPF, DEF, SCR systems.
How often depends, but on average I get one every 500-600 miles with mostly motorway miles. You don't get a light when it happens as it just occurs in the background. The light will only come on when the car MUST do a regen (due to failed/interrupted regens), when this happens you must drive the car at reasonable speed till the light goes off
The engine software (04L906056KQ/3775) has an interesting feature re DPF regens. If engine is turned off when regen has reached more than 70% the full regen cycle (soot from 24 grams down to 6 grams), the regen does not continue any more when engine is restarted next time. Instead engine runs normally till soot level has again reached 24 grams.
